Man barricades himself from New Jersey police as officers try to deliver arrest warrant, police say
A man wanted for domestic violence in Monroe Township, New Jersey, was arrested after barricading himself inside of a Newfield home for hours on Monday, according to police.
The Gloucester County Office of Emergency Management initially asked residents in the area of Woodlawn and Catawba avenues in Newfield to shelter in place until further notice on Monday afternoon. The Franklin Township Police Department also posted on Facebook that a SWAT team was in the area of Woodlawn and Catawba avenues responding to the incident.
While the details surrounding the incident weren't immediately clear, Franklin Township police shared on Tuesday what exactly led up to the heavy law enforcement presence and shelter-in-place order.
According to police, just before 12:30 p.m., officers were sent to a home on Woodlawn Avenue to serve an arrest warrant out of Monroe Township. The warrant was issued for an unidentified man wanted for a mandatory domestic violence charge and endangering the welfare of a child in connection with an incident that happened earlier Monday, police said.
Officers first saw the man at the front door of the home on Woodlawn Avenue but police said they couldn't make contact with him. The Gloucester County SWAT team went to the home at around 2:15 p.m. to help with what had been deemed a criminal barricade.
During the investigation, authorities shut down the area near Catawba and Woodlawn avenues to drivers and issued the shelter in place.
More than five hours later, the SWAT team found the suspect hiding in a crawl space inside the home and took him into custody. The man was brought to the Monroe Township Police Department for processing, according to police.
