Photo shows pipe that broke and caused massive flood in Skokie, Illinois
Images released Tuesday show the pipe at the center of the devastating leak in north suburban Skokie last month.
On Friday, Feb. 14, Valentine's Day, video showed millions of gallons of water flooding out streets and creating icy yards. The flood also totaled cars and required emergency calls to the plumber.
CBS News Chicago has now obtained more than 100 internal documents and photos outlining what happened that day. A photo taken by Skokie engineers shows repairs made to the broken pipe at East Prairie Road and Emerson Street — which took more than a day.
The documents also show the Skokie village manager was getting messages from a trustee, asking whether work in the same area the night before had anything to do with the leak.
Another photo shows someone digging in the area the night before — with a red outline where crews dug holes and yellow shading where the major leak began just hours later.
It was already known that a fitting cap on the water main failed.
Water was shut down to thousands the day of the water main break, and a boil order was in effect for more than 24 hours.
