Man charged in fatal June 2024 shooting on Dan Ryan Expressway

A man from Alsip, Illinois, has been charged with shooting and killing a rival gang member last summer on the Dan Ryan Expressway.

Darius Norwood, 32, has been charged with one count of first-degree murder in the death of 26-year-old Tywaun Donald, according to Cook County court records. Illinois State Police said Norwood was arrested last week in Alsip.

According to a Chicago police report, Norwood was riding in a Jeep Grand Cherokee with two other people around 8:45 p.m. on June 7, 2024, when they began following Donald, who was driving a Jeep Compass along 54th Street in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.

After following Donald onto the northbound Dan Ryan Expressway, Norwood pulled out a gun and started shooting while both vehicles were near the Pershing Road exit, hitting Donald in the head.

Donald was pronounced dead at the scene.

After the shooting, Norwood and another man in the Cherokee went into a convenience store in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, where they were caught on video buying merchandise and getting back into the SUV.

Investigators tracked down the Jeep using license plate readers, and discovered gunshot residue in the back seat, where Norwood had been sitting.

Police said Norwood and Donald were both members of rival factions of the same gang which was in the midst of an ongoing conflict at the time of the shooting.

At his first court appearance on Saturday, a judge ordered Norwood held at Cook County Jail while he awaits trial. He is due back in court on March 19.
